HANOVER TOWNSHIP SHADE TREE ADVISORY COMMISSION MEETING

3630 JACKSONVILLE ROAD

BETHLEHEM, PA   18017

MONDAY, AUGUST 7, 2006 MINUTES

6:30 P.M.

ATTENDANCE:  Dan Roman, Susan Scholl, Linda Taylor, Joan Witiak, Dave Zakeski

                            GUEST:   Frank Colon, Supervisor

                        1.  Approved minutes of July 17, 2006 meeting:  Motion by Dan Roman with second by Linda Taylor.

                        2.  Review Permits:  Susan School distributed permit lists.  STAC reviewed and discussed.  Will have Zoning Officer check the status of Elsayed trees, and expired permits will be turned over to Township for further action.

                        3.  Watering and Pruning:  So far, rainfall has been adequate with no current need to water.  Will discuss further at September meeting.

Discussion about aggressive Japanese beetle attack this summer, resulting in defoliation of many township trees.

   4.  Fall Tree Planting:  Dan Roman is preparing a list of tree varieties to plant in the open space area west of Hanover Crossing.  On Thursday, August 10th, we will walk Crawford Park to assess locations for replacement trees and new tree plantings and check the bagworm damage on the beech trees.

5.   Review PNC Bank:  Ash trees are listed on plan and are an approved tree.  Noted that if Emerald ash borer invades Pennsylvania, ash trees will be at risk.

Review Traditions of America:  The number of replacement trees is incorrect and there are only 3 varieties of replacement trees listed on the plans.  There are a number of questions regarding the woodland area.  We will meet on Thursday evening to assess this area and the replacement trees scheduled to be planted there.

 6.  Old/New Business:   Will have Public Works Director check two split pear trees on Southland Dr. to determine if they are Township trees or Condo trees.

Agreed to renew our Pennsylvania Community Forests membership.

Dan Roman reported that trees on Brentwood have been topped, and a large oak on Place Rd has major dead branches.

Adjournment:   Meeting was adjourned at 8:15 p.m.  Next STAC meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 5, 2006.

                   Respectfully submitted,

                   Linda K. Taylor, Secretary
